The Leibniz-Institute for Educational Trajectories invites applications for the following full-time position (salary according to the collective agreement "TV-L" max. E13, 100% working time, starting 01.01.2026, ending 31.12.2028):

Research position in educational measurement

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi), with about 250 employees, is an independent research and infrastructure institution for empirical educational research and a member of the Leibniz Association. The core of the institute is the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), the largest long-term educational study in Germany.

 

Your work environment

The research unit Educational Measurement focuses on the measurement and analysis of psychological characteristics relevant for applied educational research. This includes research on psychological assessment, psychometrics, and methods in large-scale assessments.

Your tasks

You are expected to broaden the research profile of the research unit by pursuing independent research and publications in one or more of the following areas:

  • Item response modelling
  • Modelling of process data (e.g., response times) for competence tests
  • Application of machine learning methods in psychometrics
  • Computer- and web-based psychological assessment of cognitive abilities
  • Advanced meta-analytic research methods for educational research

You are pursuing your research independently and in cooperation with other members of the research unit. Further academic qualification with the goal of obtaining a professorial degree (‘Habilitation’) is strongly welcomed. Moreover, you will be responsible for general administrative and infrastructure tasks associated with the publication of competence data in the NEPS. This can include:

  • Scaling of competence tests
  • Methodological research on competence assessments in the NEPS
  • Documentation and training
We offer close cooperation within the research units of the NEPS and the LIfBi using the on-site infrastructure.

Your profile

  • University degree in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, empirical educational research, or statistics)
  • Doctoral degree or finishing of a doctoral study in the near future
  • Very good knowledge on test theory and test construction as well as technology-based, psychological assessment
  • Good knowledge of item response theory
  • Proficient use of statistical software (particularly R)
  • Publication experience in English, peer-reviewed journals are beneficial
  • Good command of English
  • Willingness to learn German during the first year in Bamberg
  • Willingness to relocate to Germany
